SWAC Tournament Preview: Tigers roll on

Not much to be too proud of this season if you’re a bigtime SWAC backer. No team managed to reach the 20 win plateau. In fact, only three teams managed to finish with above .500 overall records. The second place team in conference, Arkansas-Pine Bluff, who netted 14 conference wins, went 0-11 in non-conference play. To sum up, whoever wins this year’s SWAC conference tournament, will be nothing more than a speed bump to whichever #1 NCAA Tournament seed they happen to be (un)lucky enough to draw..

The Teams: Jackson State (17-1 SWAC, 19-11 Overall), Arkansas-Pine Bluff (14-4, 14-15), Alabama State (12-6,15-14), Prairie View A&M (11-7, 16-13), Texas Southern (11-7, 15-15), Alabama A&M (8-10, 11-15), Mississippi Valley State (8-10, 9-22), Grambling State (4-14, 6-20), Southern University (3-15, 5-25), Alcorn State (2-16, 2-29)

Players to watch: Garrison Johnson, Jackson State (17.3ppg), Menji Mundadi, Alcorn State (16.5ppg), DeAndre Hall, Texas Southern (16.3ppg), Darnell Hugee, Prairie View (15.2ppg)

Winner: Jackson State. Riding a 13 game win streak into the conference tournament, Jackson State hasn’t lost in almost eight weeks. Expect more of the same as the Tigers will advance to the NCAA Tournament.

NCAA Tournament Outlook(s): One and Done. It’s blowout city for the Tigers as a likely 16 seed in the Big Dance.
