Dayton opened up their first game in the A10 Tournament with a 50-31 lead at halftime on their way to an 87-74 win over Fordham. The Flyers never trailed in the game and in fact never held a lead fewer than five points from the time that was established. The Flyers as a team shot lights out, 59 percent from the floor and 47 percent from three. Dayton had the tough task of covering Branden Frazier and Jon Severe, two of the highest scoring players in the conference. Those two scored 45 points, but on a combined 13-42 shooting. For Dayton, guard Vee Sanford was perfect, 9-9 from the floor, 3-3 from three point range, and 2-2 from the line on his way to a team-high 23 points The Flyers got a double-double out of forward Devin Oliver, who had 17 points on 5-8 shooing and 11 rebounds. Oliver shot 3-5 from three.
Fordham shot just 36 percent but had several chances to pull within five but continuously failed to do so. A major reason they were in the game at all was their defense stepped up in the first several minutes of the second half. With 10 minutes left the score was 66-61, but that was as close as it ever got.
Dayton will take on St. Joe’s at 2:30pm tomorrow in a huge battle between the number 4 and 5 seeds in the Atlantic 10 Tournament.
