The 33rd annual Bass Pro Shops Tournament of Champions took place last week in rainy/icy Springfield, Missouri. The field saw 6 powerhouse teams, 4 of which were ranked in the top 5 and two local Springfield teams. The major schools were Sierra Canyon from California, Memphis East from Tennessee, Montverde Academy from Florida, Findlay Prep from Las Vegas and Greenforest Christian Academy from Atlanta.
On those 8 teams were the number 1 sophomore in the country, R.J. Barrett from Montverde and the number 1 junior in the country, Marvin Bagley III from Sierra Canyon. There were also four major recruits in this year’s senior class, P.J. Washington from Findlay Prep who is committed to Kentucky, Cody Riley from Sierra Canyon, who is committed to UCLA, Jared Ridder from Springfield’s Kickapoo, who is going to Xavier next season and Ikey Obiagu, a 7 footer from Greenforest who will play at Florida State.
The tournament also featured a former NBA legend as Memphis East was coached by Penny Hardaway.
The best game of the tournament came in the second semifinal between Memphis East and Montverde. East’s junior guard Alex Lomax sunk a game-winning three ball at the buzzer, his team’s first triple of the night.
Unfortunately for Penny Hardaway’s squad, they were blown out in the final by Marvin Bagley III, Cody Riley and the Sierra Canyon Trailblazers who also feature Remy Martin who is committed to Arizona State, Adam Seiko who is committed to San Diego State and Terrance McBride who is committed to Cornell. That is an unbelievable starting 5.
Other commits from the tournament:
- Justin Roberts from Findlay Prep (DePaul)
- Victor Enoh from Greenforest (Memphis)
- Cameron Davis from Kickapoo (Navy)
- Josh Anderson from Madison Prep (Western Kentucky)
- Sean Mobley from Montverde (VCU)
- Rechon Black from Montverde (North Carolina)
- Austin Carr from Montverde (Pitt)
- Cameron Healy from Montverde (Albany)
