Day 2 was a day of blow outs and a big upset. Tennessee beat Xavier 64-49. Wake Forest cruised to a 77-63 win over USC. Iowa crushed UTEP 89-53. The one I didn’t see coming was Kansas losing to unranked Villanova with a final of 63-59.
Here are today’s match ups and my predictions in italics at the end. (All times Eastern Standard Time).
Xavier vs USC 1pm
Both teams have lost all their games in this tournament. The best either of these teams played was Xavier against Iowa on Thursday night before losing in overtime. If Semaj Christon is healthy, the Musketeers will finally win their first one in the Bahamas. USC needs to be more consistent with field goals, or this could be a blow out.
Musketeers by six.
Tennessee vs Wake Forest 3:30pm
Even though Wake Forest lost to Kansas on Thursday, this team is not looking back and are showing their balanced offense. Tennessee crushed Xavier last night to even their series at one game a piece for the year. This will be the close game of the day, but the Deacons will come out on top.
Deacons by four.
UTEP vs Kansas 7pm
Both teams are coming off tough loses from yesterday. UTEP was never able to get their offense moving against Iowa and ended up losing by 36. KU was stunned last night by Villanova and needs to stay more consistent. They haven’t met in over twenty years and the Jayhawks need this win to gain their confidence back for this 3rd place game.
Jayhawks by nine.
Iowa vs Villanova 9:30pm
This isn’t the championship game I had originally envisioned, but I’ll take it. The Hawkeyes rolled against UTEP in their best performance of the year. Villanova didn’t have as easy of a time against the Jayhawks, but Darrun Hillard and Dylan Ennis each scored 14 to lead the Wildcats. Iowa’s Aaron White led all scorers with 17. Iowa’s bench is too deep and their rebounding, 5th in the country, will get the Hawkeyes the win.
Hawkeyes by seven.
