In their last-ever regular season ACC game, Maryland went out in style by beating rival and fifth-ranked Virginia, 75-69. Maryland led by three with 2.7 seconds left and elected to foul Virginia. Malcolm Brogdon hit the first free throw and missed the second but the ball was knocked out of bounds off of the Terps with 1.6 seconds left. Anthony Gill scored on a perfectly drawn up inbound play to send it to overtime.
In OT Maryland took over, particularly guard Seth Allen, who scored Maryland’s first five points in the extra session. Allen finished with a game-high 20 points and only turned the ball over once. Perhaps the most important stat of the game is that Maryland shot 80 percent from the free throw line. Dez Wells was a perfect 8-8, part of his 18 point effort. Evan Smotrycz (13 points) and Shaquille Cleare (5 points, 5 rebounds) played critical roles for the Terps with Charles Mitchell in foul trouble for a large portion of the game.
Virginia shot just 38.6 percent and 28 percent from three. London Perrantes was the best and most consistent player on the floor for the Cavaliers. He finished with 14 points on 5-8 shooting.
Maryland awaits the end NC State/Boston College game to see their ACC Tournament seeding. A Boston College win means they are the 7th seed. Virginia already has the number one seed locked up and a first round bye. In the crowd to watch the Terps win were Gary Williams, Torrey Smith, Lefty Driesell, Tahj Holden, Steve Francis, and many other former great Terrapins.
